Jeddah-Makkah direct road project launched for private sector

Riyadh - Live: The Saudi General Authority for Roads, in cooperation with the National Center for Privatization, announced the start of the expression of interest phase for the project to operate and maintain the direct Jeddah-Makkah road, and to establish and operate service areas on both sides of the road.

The authority added that this comes after the approval of the Supervisory Committee for Privatization in the Transport and Logistics Sector, headed by His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Roads, Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

 They said that this step aims to search for the best companies specialized in road works, in continuation of the steps taken for qualitative projects, ensuring that projects are implemented with the highest standards of safety and quality, and providing the best services to road users, in order to achieve the objectives of the Roads Sector Strategy and the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.

 The project will be implemented in partnership with the private sector under a contract model that includes the operation and maintenance of the direct Jeddah-Makkah road, and (design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance) of the service areas on both sides of the direct Jeddah-Makkah road, for a period of 10 years.

They explained that the project aims to operate and maintain the direct Jeddah-Makkah road, which consists of four lanes in each direction extending over a distance of 64 kilometers, including 6 intersections, one camel crossing, and 5 car crossings. The project also includes the construction, operation, and maintenance of 4 service areas on both sides of the road.

 The road will greatly serve pilgrims and Umrah performers heading to Makkah Al-Mukarramah, as it is one of the shortest roads linking Jeddah Governorate and the Holy Capital, at 35 minutes. The road will also contribute to supporting logistical and tourism movement in the region, and contribute to maintaining the Kingdom’s position in the global connectivity index.

 The Authority and the Center called on investors interested in road works to review the Request for Expression of Interest document containing project information by visiting the National Center for Privatization website. The submission phase for requests for expression of interest ends on October 24, 2024.
